The Silver Philharmonic is actually quite significant. Apart from the silver Britannia, which is way too expensive, this is the first contemporary European silver bullion coin.

My invoice showed them charging me the VAT. Is that proper for a customer from the USA?

Anyone know if APMEX is going to carry them eventually?

I'm not absolutely sure about this, but I think that you shouldn't have to pay VAT.

Their own web site says that VAT is for customers from the European Union. Moreover, I placed the order Thursday evening here in the US. We're in the midst of a heavy snow storm (10-14 inches) and I'll probably be snowed in Friday morning because my car is parked in an alley garage in the middle of the block (I'll be lucky if it gets ploughed Friday at all). They want their funds wired to them BEFORE 04.02.2008. I don't think I can get it done that quickly. Looks like I'll be cancelling my order and waiting for the coins to become available from a US dealer.

Re: Silver Philharmonic Bullion Coin

There's a dealer a couple of blocks from where I work. I walk in every couple of weeks to check and mentioned the silver Philharmonic. He hadn't heard of them. Didn't surprise me. His prices are $3-$4 higher than other shops here for maples, plus you have to add 5% tax (never could understand being taxed to buy govn't money). He said he had a connection in Europe, but it will probably be 35$ for a bullion ounce coin. Not!

I periodically go south of the border here. So I have started to buy 2-3 SAEs or prospectors a trip, better prices and no tax, and stick them with my change in my pocket as I cross the border.

@ Merlin

In order to avoid the VAT as a foreign retail buyer you will, in all likelihood, have to buy the stuff in the country and upon leaving you will have to prove that you live outside the European Union. If it were not that way all European citizens would order their stuff via a foreign address to get around the VAT.

BUT: the Austrian mint has a North American Agent - maybe this a better way to obtain European silver coins:

Austria

Mint Name: Euro Collections International Inc
Description: North American Agent
Address: 621 Discovery St., Suite 727 Victoria, BC, CANADA V8W 2P9
Telephone :1-888-904-5544

Well, that doesn't work well for me. I'm not currently in Europe. I'm in Indiana.

Thank you Horst. After paying 7% VAT + the $45 cost of a wire transfer of funds + cost of the coins themselves, ordering from Europe is not really a cost-effective way to buy bullion -- even if the coins themselves are very beautiful.

Good for you, TomD. Your spectacular photos speak for themselves. But, let us be clear, it is the quality of your work that gets results -- definitely not a con. The rest of us are jealous though.

Speaking of TomD and Austrian Philharmonics (this time, the gold variety), it was his photographs posted here that induced me to buy my first 1oz Philharmonic back in October last year. He does great work.

The good folks at coininvestdirect.com cancelled my original invoice with the VAT and re-issued a new invoice with no tax. When I placed the order, I did not realize they would require a wire transfer for payment (which any thinking person would have anticipated -- I'm a dummy!) So, even though the price of silver has dropped and the cost of the wire transfer and shipping make the cost of the bullion coins higher than I would like, I'm doing the honorable thing and completing the transaction. The rest of you might be smart to wait for APMEX. I'm sure that's the more cost-effective route.

I can see why; they have been very responsive. But the wire transfer is costing me $45 and the shipping is more than $22. That's quite a hefty transaction fee for 20 ounces of silver :) And it's all TomD's fault for seducing me with the Austrian Philharmonic in the first place! Now he's tempting me with that damned mouse.

No more that 20 coins per at this point because I am not sure if or when I will even receive my order. Also, I will not lock in any prices until we have them in our hand. Once we put them on our site, I will let you know and provide a link so you can buy them.

They are BEAUTIFUL! They come packaged similar to the Gold Buffalo coins in sheets of 20 and induvidual heat sealed squares.

Re: Silver Philharmonic Bullion Coin

Over the years the mouse and rat have become interchangeable in some circles..............<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

That's unfortunate because there is a story about how these animals became the 12 symbols for the Chinese zodiac - and when you change mouse to rat, you lose a little of the inference - that the smallest creature won the contest.

Legend

According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever was to reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according to their finish.

All the twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the mouse had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the mouse jumped off the ox's back, and won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the mouse is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last.

It hadn't dawned on me that there is no mouse in the Chinese Zodiac. Thanks for pointing that out Tom and Racoon.

It's a shame the Perth Mint is kicking off Lunar Series II as awkwardly as they wrapped up Series I. But, I still haven't seen the new ones in person, so I may still collect a one and two ounce coin each year they're issued.

I can't wait for these Ag Phils, at any rate. I'm also really curious what kind of price range to expect, so I can know how many to try to reserve without jacking around anyone.

OK, so here's a clue. coininvestdirect.com in the UK is selling the Phils this morning for US$20.36 and the silver American Eagles for US$21.44. So, I can't speak for APMEX or any other US distributor; but it looks like they will be priced competitively with Eagles and Maples.

Re: Silver Philharmonic Bullion Coin

For people in the European Union that are interested to buy the coin, I can suggest the following shop:
http://www.muenzenmueller.de
You end up paying the low 7% German VAT instead of the 20% VAT of other countries (Italy, for example).
I found the shop on this site:
http://www.bullionpage.de
that allows you to compare prices (ask and bid) of bullion coins in many countries.

Unless you are planning to travel to Austria, where the gold and silver Wiener Philharmoniker are on sale at the national bank, as far as I know.
